An annual festival called the Epulum Jovis in Capitola was celebrated on this date in ancient times in honour of Jupiter (the supreme god of the ancient Roman religion, identified with the Greek god Zeus) and the goddesses Minerva and Juno.

Animal sacrifices were made at temples in the city of Rome and bonfires were set ablaze at sunset.
